For Oregon, the entrance to the College Football Playoff will come only by beating Arizona in the Pac 12 Conference Championship Game on Friday, at 9:00 PM ET a the Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, CA.
Oregon remains No. 2 in the College Football Rankings released on Tuesday. A win over the Wildcats will put the Ducks in a position to play in the first college football playoff.
The Ducks (8-1) will rely on mobile quarterback Marcus Mariota who will be one of the Heisman Trophy finalists this season. Mariota has been a fours in college football as he has thrown for at least one touchdown in each of the first 38 games he played with the Ducks. However, he has to face the defense that beat him the past two years.
The quarterback from Hawaii had already made a Pac-12 record with 48 total touchdowns, 36 in passing, 11 in rushed, and one reception. Mariota has 3,470 yards in 229 of 334 passes and two interceptions. He has also rushed for 636 yards this season.
Mariota was limited to 276 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-24 loss to Arizona at Autzen Stadium this year. Mariota was contained and sacked in the final drive of Oregon.
Offensively, Oregon averages 307.5 yards in passing and 232 yards in rushing. Defensively, Oregon yields 271.8 in passing and 157.5 in rushing.
The Arizona Wildcats have another chance to prove that they can overpower Oregon. Coach Rich Rodriguez knows the secret of beating the high-octane offense of the Ducks. He said that Arizona was able to slowdown Mariota with three things: turnovers, effort and luck.
“If you look back at his stats, he got a lot of yards and big plays, but we got a couple turnovers. Some of it was great individual effort and some of it was a little bit of luck,” Rodriguez said. “If you go back to this game or even the game last season, he still got his yards, and he is still going to get his yards and make his plays.”
The Wildcats barely defeated Arizona State,42-35, through the rushing offense of Nick Wilson who rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns in 24 attempts.
Offensively, Arizona averages 291.4 in passing and 189.8 in rushing. Defensively, Arizona yields 275.2 in passing and 159.5 in rushing.
