The Oregon Ducks host the Stanford Cardinal in one of the most heated rivalries in college football at the Autzen Stadium, Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.
Oregon football might have a shot to be in the college football playoffs, currently the team ranked No. 5. However, the yearly stumbling block would come from the hands of the fellow Pac 12 North Stanford.
In the past two years, Oregon was thwarted by the Cardinal. Oregon was 10-0 before a 17-14 overtime home loss in 2012 and 8-0 last year before suffering a 26-20 road defeat by Stanford. It would be hard for the Ducks to be on the lossing end again after a 7-1 start.
Marcus Mariota is the leader of Oregon, but he hasn’t tasted a victory over the Cardinal in his career. Mariota’s explosiveness can be attributed to the spread offense of the Ducks. He leads the FBS with 10.47 yards per pass attempt and he is tied with 24 touchdown passes.
In order for Mariota to get a win over Stanford, he has to extricate and to avoid being sacked. Mariota was sacked six times in the two games he played Stanford.
Offensively, Oregon averages 311.8 yards in passing and 223.1 in rushing. Defensively, Oregon yields 290.5 yards in passing and 171.4 in rushing.
Stanford is already out in the college football rankings. However, Stanford is not out of winning the Pac-12 North to have a chance to win the Pac 12.
Stanford has dropped already three games for the season, the first time in five years. The defense of Stanford would be the key in taming the offense of Oregon.
Kevin Hogan completed 18 of 28 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-14 win last week over Oregon State. Hogan also added 39 yards and a Td in five attempts on the ground.
Stanford played a balance game through the ground and the air to solidly capture the win. Offensively, Stanford averages 241.5 yards in passing and 141.3 in rushing. Defensively, Stanford yields 160 in passing and 90.6 in rushing.
