The New England Patriots host the Detroit Lions on Sunday’s NFL schedule, November 23, at 1:00 PM, at the Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.
Riding on a six-game winning streak, the Patriots control their destiny in the seedings of the AFC. While there are six more games, the Patriots see the advantage of getting the top seed of the conference.
The Patriots have won 14th straight at Gillette Stadium and they know how important this game is against the visiting Lions, who maintains the best defense in the NFL. New England showed what it can possibly do against high-powered offenses by beating Denver 43-21 at home on November 2 and a road victory, 42-20 over Indianapolis.
With the balance offensive attacks, New England cherishes to exploit their opponents. Against Denver, the Patriots threw 53 passes and ran 25 times. Against Indianapolis, New England rushed 44 times and threw 30 times.
Quarterback Tom Brady threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions. He made mistakes but his team won the game.
Third string running back Jonas Gray rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns in 37 attempts. He significantly altered the offense of the Patriots by running well against the Colts.
“We always try to stay balanced,” said Brady. “You never go in saying we’re going to run it this much or throw it this much. You try to get the runs on your terms, and if they’re going to load up and stop it, you’ve got to throw it, but if they’re not going to respect the running game, you’ve got to keep giving it to him.”
Offensively, New England averages 264.9 yards in passing and 115.7 in rushing. Defensively, New England yields 241.9 in passing and 109.9 in rushing.
The Detroit Lions want to bounce back quickly after losing to the Arizona Cardinals, 14-6. The Lions were clobbered by the defense of their opponents, without any touchdown.
It was uncharacteristic for the Lions to suffer a loss without a touchdown pass from quarterback Matthew Stafford, who completed 18 of 30 passes for 183 yards.
Widereceiver Calvin Johnson had only 59 yards in five receptions while Golden Tate caught two passes for 41 yards.
“They’ve shown in spurts they have grit, they’re tough, they come back, they fight you,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “Even in (the Arizona) ball game, the effort was unreal. When you get that kind of effort, you just have to work on execution and some things. We’ll get better. I do think this team has the fortitude to be real resilient under disappointment.”
Offensively, Detroit averages 252.5 yards in passing and 79.8 in rushing. Defensively, Detroit yields 221.5 (5th in the NFL) in passing and 68.8 in rushing (1st in the NFL).
