The College Football Playoff selection committee will soon release the new rankings after a gigantic upset by Alabama on Mississippi State.
It remains to be seen if Alabama jumps into No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, or No 4, but surely the Crimson Tide would not stay at No. 5, the previous College Football Rankings.
Controversies would arise in the coming weeks as the new system is more confusing and disturbing. Last Tuesday, the undefeated Florida State was outranked by one loss Oregon. It’s the first time in so many years that a powerful unbeaten team, even the defending national champion, was outranked.
If a one loss team like Oregon could outranked Florida State, then a one-loss team like Alabama and Mississippi State could be higher in the upcoming college football rankings.
Let’s take the case of Alabama first, which defeated the No. 1 team Mississippi State 25-20 last Saturday. Because of the win and the possibility of a one loss team outranking Florida, Alabama should be No. 1 in the College Football Rankings to be released on Tuesday Night.
How about the possible ranking of Mississippi State? This would be very difficult for the selection committee. Mississippi State defeated three top 10 teams, namely LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn. Mississippi State would fall into No. 5 or the best at No. 3, behind Oregon. Florida State would end up at No. 4, while TCU would drop to No. 5.
