The San Francisco Giants take on the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 of the MLB NLCS Playoffs on Wednesday at 8:07 PM ET at the AT&T Park. The SF Giants lead the series 2-1 after a surprising ending in Game 3 Tuesday.
The SF Giants chance is better when Ryan Vogelsong is on the mound, winning games that propelled them to win the World Series in 2012. Vogelsong was responsible in eliminating the Washington Nationals in Game 4 by having a 3-2 win as he allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings.
“You can’t replace the way it feels to pitch in the playoffs,” Vogelsong told MLB’s official website. “They all bring a little bit different emotion depending on the game and the situation. It’s going to be intense.”
Vogelsong had a 1.19 ERA in those playoff games, with two wins over the Cardinals in the NLCS two years ago. He yielded one run and four hits in seven innings in Game 2 and Game 6 in 2012.
The SF Giants would love to have another win and Vogelsong should give his teammates that opportunity like what happened in Game 3. Randy Choate came on to pitch the 10th for St. Louis and allowed a leadoff walk and a single. Gregor Blanco attempted a sacrifice bunt, and when Choate tried to throw him out at first the throw sailed wide to allow Brandon Crawford to score the winning run in the Giants’ 5-4 victory.
The St Louis Cardinals will play without ace catcher Yadier Molina. A.J. Perzynske started as the replacement for Molina Tuesday. However, Tony Cruz might be starting in Game 4 for Shelby Miller as the starting pitcher.
Miller yielded two runs and walking three in 5 2/3 innings over the Dodgers as the Cardinals won that Game 4, 3-2. “Even with that one start under your belt, you’re starting in a hectic environment in San Francisco,” Miller said. “It is a big ballpark with a bunch of big gaps. The biggest thing is try to get ground balls, try to keep the ball out of the air as much as possible.”
