After beating then-No. 6 Notre Dame, The Florida State football maintained its No. 2 ranking, in the Associated Press just recently released Sunday.
What is interesting in this week’s AP Top 10 rankings are the teams in the SEC West juggling for positions. Whoever have thought that this rankings would happen at the start of the FBS season?
By taking a bye, Mississippi State remains at No. 1. Ole Miss was not shaken either. But the big jump comes from the Alabama Crimson Tide after beating Texas A&M 59-0. Moreover, the Auburn Tigers are back in the top 5. Because of the losses of Notre Dame and Baylor, Alabama and Auburn were able to jump, paving the way for four SEC West teams to be in the top 5.
Thirty times since 2001 a conference has placed three teams in the top five of the AP Top 25. The SEC had done it 16 times since 2009, according to ESPN.
With the current domination of the SEC West teams, what are the chances that two of these football clubs (Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State) would play in the college football playoff?
Let it all be reminded that the college football playoff system, not the BCS, is in place starting this season. Four teams will be selected for the college football playoff, the two winners will be in the College football Championship Game.
First, Mississippi State and Ole Miss meet each other for the Egg Bowl, thus one will have a chance to stay undefeated. And it’s possible the losing team will still enter into the playoff.
Probably, the SEC West would provide controversies for the team assigned to select the top four teams in the country for the college football playoff.
