Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops wants this game than anybody else. He has been in the spotlight after criticizing the SEC way back as the spring of 2013 when he mentioned about the league’s supremacy, meaning the SEC, propaganda.
Stoops believes that SEC is not supreme as the other conference like the Big 12, which his team are in. He once proved when Oklahoma Sooners shocked Alabama, 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl.
Oklahoma (2-0) has displayed the stingy defense before halftime, by just yielding three points to the Louisiana Tech and allowing Tulsa to gain 95 yards without any score. Thus, Oklahoma’s defense would be the weapon of Stoops in rallying his troops to be significant in terms of going into the College Football playoff. By outscoring the opponents 62-3, the Sooners showed how prepared their defense is to topple the stronger teams like the Volunteers.
Quarterback Trevor Knight wants to backup the desire of his coach in this match. In the last game against Tulsa, Knight threw for 299 yards in a 21 of 34 passing and two touchdowns. Moreover, one of the offensive players to watch for the Sooners would be junior Sterling Shepard who caught eight times for 177 yards. He had 14 catches for 175 yards last season in his final two games, against Oklahoma State and the Crimson Tide.
Without a doubt, the offense and defense of the Sooners are much improved and it is the right time to be tested first against the Vols. It’s a continuing process for the Sooners until they reach their goal, better than last year.
When it comes to improvements, the Volunteers have been impressive in the defense. At 2-0, Tennessee has stopped the opponents’ third-down conversions into just 7 of 31. This is to tell the world the Vols are back into being competitive not only against the SEC teams but anybody in college football. Tennessee’s game against Oklahoma would be a litmus test of what kind of a squad they are now.
”We wanted to be better on third down,” linebacker A.J. Johnson said. ”Pretty much, that’s the money down.”
Vols coach Butch Jones tells the defense is much improved in the speed and the capability to impact the opposing quarterback. The physicality of the Vols will be challenged by the offensive schemes of the Sooners.
Oklahoma vs Tennessee football would absolutely be a battle of defenses. Which of the teams would blink?
