Big Ten contender Penn State confronts Akron in the college football Week 2 on Saturday, September 6 at 12:00 PM ET at the Beaver Stadium, University Park, PA.
The Penn State Nittany Lions won their opening game against Central Floriday, 26-24, in a thrilling match in front of a capacity crowd in Ireland. Sam Ficken converted the game-winning 36-yard field goal as time expired in Overtime.
Christian Hackenberg completed 32 of his 47 passes for a whopping 454 yards and two touchdowns to dominate the defense of UCF. Hackenberg’s poise was tested when the game went into the wire. Moreover, Hackenberg continuously found wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton, who caught 11 passes for 165 yards, setting a school record in receiving for freshmen.
Hackenberg would be in the radar as the Nittany Lions encounter a much prepared Akron Zips. If the combination of Hackenberg and Hamilton works early in the first quarter, the Zips would be in trouble.
Offensively, the Nittany Lions accumulated a net of 511 yards in Week 1 against UCF, while the they had 34.7 minutes of possession.
In the their opening game, Akron Zips overpowered the FCS Howard Bizon, 41-0, through the quarterbacking of Kyle Pohl, who had 204 yards and four touchdowns in 24-for-35 passing. The junior starting quarterback added 40 yards on the ground.
If Pohl can sneak through the defense of Penn State in this match, then the Zips will have a chance to win. Also, the defense of Akron needs to be stingy over the offense of the Nittany Lions.
One of the arsenals of Penn State would be tailback Zack Zwinack, who had 989 yards on the ground in 210 attempts and 12 rushing touchdowns, to lift the team in 2013. Bill Belton is part of the rushing offense for the Lions. Belton rushed for 803 total yards in 157 attempts las season.
Toppling Penn State is one of the hardest things to do, but the Zips are determined to pound the football just to move the chains.
