The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers trounced the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 73-57, in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Louie Vigil scored a career-high 17 points for the Tigers to continue their dominance against the Maroons, winning 15 games in a row.
Vigil was so focused on the game when he made a three-pointer with 1:22 left that put the Tigers by 18 points, 72-54.
The Maroons were up by 11 points early in the game by the score of 36-25. However, the Growling Tigers implemented a full court press to catch up by having a one point lead, 46-45, half-way through the third quarter.
“I’m not surprised with the way he (Vigil) is playing. He’s been playing well in our summer tournaments and I expected him to be one of our scorers here in the UAAP,” head coach Bong dela Cruz,
Aljon Mariano added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Tigers to solidify their offense. Furthermore, Karim Abdul led all the scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds.
The Growling Tigers prepare a showdown against Ateneo Blue Eagles on Thursday.
