The Far Eastern University Tamaraws defeated the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 75-69, at the second round of the UAAP Season 77 Seniors Men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Fighting Maroons played gallantly against the top seed Tamaraws as they kept the game close until the fourth quarter. FEU finished strong in the end game with a 7-0 run in the final two minutes to seal the win over the determined UP.
Mike Tolomia scored 19 points to lead the Tamaraws, while Mark Belo added 14 points and grabbed seven boards.
Rey Gallarza led the Fighting Maroons with 18 points as he converted four out of his six attempts in the three-point line. Mikee Reyes added 14 points for a losing effort for UP.
“Actually I’m not that happy with the game, there is something quite bothersome that we tend to relax when we face up against the lower-ranked players,” said by Gonzales. Assistant coach Eric Gonzales took charged the coaching position left by Nash Racela who is now with team Gilas Pilipinas in Spain.
FEU was focused to win all remaining games of their campaign to secure the twice to beat advantage in the final four. “We want the top seed or the second seed, we want a twice-to-beat advantage,” stated by Gonzales. “I keep on reminding the players to treat every game as a stepping stone.”
FEU improved their record with 9-2 and remained at the top spot of the standing.
