Tour De France 2016 Stage 12 Results and Standings: Chris Froome run without a bike after an unexpected twist in TDF

Chris Froome decided to run without a bike following a crash with one of the motorbikes in a crowded ascent to the finish.

Froome and the entire Sky Team managed to counter the attacks of rivals from Movistar Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana in the first part of the climb to Mont Ventoux, then the defending champion launch an attack that his counterparts couldn’t keep except for Richie Porte and Bauke Mollema until the three crashed into a camera motorbike with one kilometer from the finish.

The two-time TDF champion ended up one minute and 40 seconds behind Mollema, who was able to rise up quickly to the finish. Froome was also 44 seconds behind Porte.

In the provisionary Tour de France GC classification standings, Adam Yates was the leader while Quintana gained time over Froome. However, Tour De France organizers elected to give Froome and Porte the same time as Mollema that enabled the Briton to increase his lead and to remain in the yellow jersey.

According to the UCI, cycling’s governing body, a cyclist can cross the line on foot but only if they have their bike with them. Froome ran without his bike while waiting for his team car for a replacement. A neutral car gave him a new bike but it was not good enough for him that he had to wait for his team, that was about three minutes behind.

Froome, who held a 28-second advantage over Yates overnight, extended his lead to 47 seconds, with Quintana.

Stage 13 of Tour De France is expected to be filled with changes in the overall standings as the riders are going to by themselves in individual time trial.
