2016 Los Angeles Lakers News and Rumors Updates: Timofey Mozgov is too expensive, unfathomable move?

The Los Angeles Lakers may not have a chance to even talk to Kevin Durant as the free agency has already started, but they have reached a verbal agreement on a four-year deal worth $64 million to Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng on a four-year $72 million.

Mozgov’s agent Andy Miller told The Vertical that the Lakers and Mozgov has agreed for that term. The Lakers have started to be aggressive in the free agency market this time as they try to build a playoff team. With projected cap space of around $56 million, the Lakers concentrated of filling up the center position which they lacked in the previous seasons. Questions linger as to why Mozgov was the choice if centers like Hassan Whiteside, Joakim Noah and even Dwight Howard are still available.

Mozgov averaged 6.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 17.4 minutes during the 2015-2016 season. Mozgov showed his best in the 2015 NBA Finals when he was second to LeBron James in points. Mozgov will help power forward Julius Randle and Brandon Ingram to build a dynamic roster.

Surely, the Lakers are still hoping to land a reliable free agent that would form a powerful team for newly-hired coach Luke Walton to work with.

Do you think the Lakers made the right decision?

I think they made a good bringing in Mosgov. The lakers will be playing from the outside in, and he is a good re-bounder, and guards the rim. That is what they need. they do not need a scorer, they need defense.

In response to, “Do you think the Lakers made the right decision?”, yes, the Lakers made the right decision to sign Timofey Mosgov at $16MM annually, as other centers made decisions based on financial decisions:Hassan Whiteside had planned to stay in Miami and with $24.5MM annually and no state income taxes; Joakim Noah is injury prone and was aligned with Derrick Rose and is making $16MM annually and Dwight Howard is not as dominant a center as he should be and is making $23.5MM annually. Timofey provides good value and one must remember when he was at Denver how strong, athletic and explovie he was. He just did not have the opportunity in Cleveland.

This is absolute garbage. Of course the Lakers overpayed for Mozgof. They jumped the gun and agreed to a contract with him first, before waiting to see what would happen with other free agent centers. For example, Golden State was able to sign Zaza to a 2.8m/1 yr deal and Ezeli was snatched up for far less than Mozgof as well. If the Lakers had been patient, they could have probably still gotten Mozgof for around the same value as Ezeli and would have saved a bunch of money, as well as shortening the length of the deal. Or they could have found another value at center besides Mozgof. The Lakers were foolish and they will regret that decision come year 3 and 4 of that deal. Mozgof is an average center, always has been, but he was our #1 priority and that is where they made their mistake.
