Dallas Cowboys Rumors and News: Running backs Darren MCFadden, Joseph Randle to compete for the starting backfield, will not play against SF 49ers?

The Dallas Cowboys are entering into their second preseason game, this time against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. While there’s not much controversy on who is the starting quarterback, the running back starting position is being fought by Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle.

McFadden and Randle are not expected to play against the 49ers on Sunday because of injuries. According to to reports, Randle “aggravated an oblique muscle” during practice this week , while the Cowboys may not risk McFadden to play as he is coming off of a hamstring injury.

Though Randle was in uniform, with helmets and shorts, last Friday, his practice was not at full speed. Randle ran through the walkthrough session with the first-team offense, according to Profootballtalk.

The Dallas Cowboys need to see both running backs in great health. It would be hard to fathom the Cowboys going into the playoffs without McFadden and Randle.

McFadden is entering into his eight year in the NFL. He played with the Oakland Raiders in his first seven years. Last season, he played 16 games but only attempted 155 times resulting into 534 yards and two touchdowns. His breakout season was in 2010 when he rushed for 1,157 yards and 7 touchdowns in 223 attempts. He is looking to rejuvenate his career with the Dallas Cowboys.

Randle was the backup of Demarco Murray in the last two seasons. He attempted 51 times for 343 yards in 2014. He needs to get more touches to improve his numbers.

Gus Johnson and Lance Dunbar will have the opportunity to be the two running backs to play on Sunday. The Cowboys still hope that McFadden and Randle will play to the max in the regular season. To run the offense of the Cowboys with Tony Romo at the anchor, the running back position must take responsibilities.
