Washington Redskins News and Rumors: self-proclaimed best NFL QB Robert Griffin III concussion, Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy the backup would also be in trouble?

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, who claimed that he feels he is the best quarterback last week, left the second quarter of Washington vs Detroit game at FedEx Field with concussion. Showing confidence earlier in the game, Griffin was hit while trying to recover a fumble.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden was unsure when Griffin would be able to be back with the roster but there’s no doubt that he would return when healthy. Before Griffin is cleared to play, he has to undergo the league’s concussion protocol.

“We’ll have to wait, go through the whole process, see how he recovers, see how fast he recovers,” Gruden said in his postgame news conference.

Lions DE Corey Wootton tackled the quarterback in the second quarter and looked like landing on his shoulder. Griffin stayed on the field for several minutes while the medical team attended him. The fourth year quarterback walked off with trainers and he provided a thumps-up signal to the fans.

Asked why Griffin was still at the center of the offense in the second quarter, Gruden said, “We weren’t doing that well on offense. I wanted to try to get something going on offense. A lot of quarterbacks play into the second quarter in a preseason game. Football is a tough sport.”

Griffin completed 2 of 5 passing for eight yards and fumbled twice before going out of the game. While the Lions played without starting defensive tackle Ngata and DE Jason James, Washington’s first team offensive linemen were overpowered and overmatched.

The WashingtonPost observes that much to be blamed was on the offensive line of the Redskins.

Griffin did his best to stand tall in the pocket, but his linemen often got shoved back into him as he did. He hit three-step drops and let go of passes but had defenders driving him to the ground a fraction of a second after the throw.

Washington played without Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, whom coaches held out as a precaution after he experienced soreness in his right knee earlier in the week. Journeyman Willie Smith started in his place, but he allowed two sacks.

Colt McCoy, entered the game as backup, threw for 80 yards and a touchdown on 5-of-6 passing in the Redskins’ 21-17 win. Will this be another season for the Redskins with quarterback controversy? When will Griffin be back? What if Colt McCoy or Kirk Cousins is playing well when Griffin would be ready?
