NBA Free Agency 2-15: Cleveland Cavs LeBron James to opt out of his contract

As expected, LeBron James will opt out of his contract and will become a free agent on July 1.

The Cleveland Cavaliers failed to win the NBA Championship and GM David Griffin has plenty of things to work out starting next week in the NBA Draft day.

While Griffin has been busy defending his coach David Blatt from reports that LeBron James action in the Finals is unbecoming and without respect to his coach, Griffin has to find ways to keep James and Kevin Love in the NBA free agency which starts on July 1.

James has signed a two-year contract last season and he has as opt out option to make an extension of his contract. However, if James would sign a long term deal now, he would be missing out on the significant salary cap increase in 2016 and 2015. Griffin expects James and Love to opt out of the last year of their contract and to re-sign with the Cavs.

James probably is going to be back for the Cavs in the next season but Love is in a different situation. All year long, right up through the Finals, Love has maintained that he “plans” to return to the Cavaliers. However, there’s always been noise from multiple reports that Love has been unhappy and is looking to at least explore departing in free agency. Love might be looking for another team that would feature his talent more. He was the number 3 option with the Cavs. With the great performances of Timofey Mosgov and Tristan Thompson as the big men during the Finals, Love might have no room to be in the roster.

If Love and James will not be back to the Cavs, then it would be a different story this season. Though James might be taking another chance of bringing the Cavs a ring, Love might be out of the Cavaliers uniform.

The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook made Cleveland the early 9-4 favorite to win the 2016 NBA title. Truly, with James and Love in the roster of the Cavs, who can beat them?
