NFL Rumors: Tennessee Titans Mariota-Mettenberger quarterback controversy looms

The Tennessee Titans selected Marcus Mariota as the No. 2 pick in the recently-concluded NBA Draft to become the starter this season. Zach Mettenberger wants to keep his starting that is about to be handed to Mariota. Mettenberger, last year’s sixth round pick, wants to compete with Mariota when he says that he is not going down with a fight.

As per

“I don’t (know) what the mind-set is, but at the end of the day, I can just control what I do and I’m extremely confident in myself, almost to a fault,” Mettenberger told ESPN’s Adam Caplan. “But people who know me know I’m not going down without a fight to the death.”

Truly, Mettenberg is one of the players that are affected by the draft. Coach Ken Whisenhunt told NFL Media’s Tiffany Blackmon Friday that Mettenberg is doing his part by helping Mariota with the Titans playbook.

As the Titans are in the minicamp seassion, the rookie quarterback impressed Whisenhunt on Friday.

“He has a great understanding of the (playbook),” Whisenhunt said. “A lot of the concepts, those kind of things, he’s really working hard to try to pick up the base parts of our offense. It’s always different when you get on the field.”

“I don’t see that as a problem,” Whisenhunt said of Mariota lining up under center. “He’s put a lot of work in. He seems pretty good. I mean, until we get into a game and you get the A-gap blitzers in there or people are pressuring, you don’t know how they are going to handle it.”

One of the problems that could arise in the Titans before the start of the season would be to have a quarterback controversy. If Mettenberger will outplay Mariota in the offseason and in the pre-season, then Whisenhunt will absolutely think twich if it is necessary to bench Mariota. As of now, the entire organization is totally impressed with the performance of the former Oregon quarterback.
