New York Jets NFL 2015 Draft: A Marcus Mariota-Geno Smith Trade and first round pick a possibility?

Surprisingly, the New York Jets interest on Marcus Mariota emerges few hours before the draft. Though it is not stated what the Jets are offering to Titans, New York is involved in talks with the Titans.

ESPN reports:

A source told Holtzman that the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and St. Louis Rams are three of the teams that have talked with the Titans about the No. 2 pick.

With no success in the recent years, the New York Jets are rumored to have a quarterback change, involving Geno Smith and the probability of acquiring Marcus Mariota in a trade.

New York is sincere in making a dramatic change in the offseason to be competitive against the Patriots. The Jets are looking at the possible quarterbacks in the 2015 NFL Draft that would endanger the place of quarterback Geno Smith, eventually losing his job.

Smith hasn’t found his way to be successful in the three years he played with the Jets. In his 2013 and 2014 regular season stats, Smith had 12 and 13 touchdowns respectively, while he was intercepted 21 times and 13 times. Though Smith has improved in the interceptions in 2014, still the Jets organization is not satisfied.

Head coach Todd Bowles mentioned this year that the quarterback spot is an open competition and that Smith is not the anointed one.

“We want competition at every position. Ryan (Fitzpatrick) is going to compete, as well as Geno is going to compete, and we hope to add somebody else to compete with them, along with (Matt) Simms.”

Bowles may be talking about the No. spot, but it seemed that Geno Smith is done with the Jets.

“Citing sources close to the Jets, ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported on Sunday that general manager Mike Maccagnan ‘hasn’t ruled out’ trading up for a quarterback in this year’s draft. Bleacher Report NFL insider Jason Cole reported on Monday that the Jets ‘want to move on’ from Smith, who is ‘not the guy.’”

“It makes sense that the Jets would be willing to move on so soon from Smith, given that neither Macagnan nor head coach Todd Bowles had any hand in his selection two years ago. Smith also showed little improvement between his first and second NFL seasons.”

When it comes to the Jets mindset of being a strong team that can compete with the Patriots, the quarterback position must be stable. It is rumored that the Jets are looking at quarterback Marcus Mariota in the NFL 2015 Draft. It would be a long shot for the Jets to land Mariota directly at sixth pick. Mariota is expected to be drafted from 1-3 picks, while Jets will pick at No. 6. A trade might be the biggest way to make this happen.
